Nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur at the Rumah Attap Library, Words’ Worth seeks to continue Kuala Lumpur’s once-vibrant poetry scene through its Writers’ Circle and monthly poetry shows while creating a supportive space for poets of all levels.
Words’ Worth is a poetry initiative curated by poet-educator Enbah Nilah Sugurmar and supported by creative professional Rupa Subramaniam. Together, the two talented individuals have created a process-driven poetry initiative to demystify poetry.
Every month, Words’ Worth hosts two events: a Writers’ Circle and a poetry show.
Both events are centred around a theme, which changes every month. The themes are designed to inspire poets to explore different aspects of themselves and society, such as belonging, freedom, land, identity, and rituals.
The poetry show is a live event where poets can perform their work in front of an audience. The show features an open mic session, where poets can share their poems in any language they prefer. The show also encourages dialogue and interaction between poets and audience members, creating a sense of community and connection.
The Writers’ Circle is an online session where poets can learn, discuss, and write together.
Led by Enbah, the Writers’ Circle provides a supportive and stimulating environment for poets to develop their craft and confidence. Poets can also get feedback and tips from their peers and mentors.
The participation fee for the Writers’ Circle is RM30 per person.
“Words’ Worth is reminiscent of the early days of spoken word poetry events in Kuala Lumpur,” Sheena says. “Intimate and supportive. I am grateful to find myself performing in such a space once more. The feedback from the randomly selected members of the audience was truly lovely to witness, as well as the writing prompts as a call to action… They encourage both discourse and the writing of poetry.”
Jack appreciates the fact that he can gain feedback directly from audience members and this helps him improve his poems.
“It’s wonderful. It’s intimate. The timing, the crowd, the space… Also, it’s interesting to get feedback straight away,” he says.
Words’ Worth: Nostalgia Edition is happening on 29 January 2024 from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm at Rumah Attap Library, Kuala Lumpur. Follow Words’ Worth on Instagram.
