Tan Chui Mui Wins an Award in Shanghai for ‘All About Yuyu’

Tan Chui Mui’s new feature film project All About Yuyu earned the “Most Creative Project” award at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festivals Film Project Venture (SIFF PROJECT) recently.

The film, the fourth for Tan, was produced by renowned Malaysian film director, writer, and producer Woo Ming Jin.

All About Yuyu marks Tan’s first foray into the wuxia and youth genre filmmaking.

“I always enjoy taking on new challenges. This time, I want to make a modern wuxia film to recapture the magical feeling I had when watching films during my childhood,” Tan said.

The film stood out from the 33 selected films. SIFF’s China producer Annie Song said she had a strong feeling Tan’s film would win an award.

“Before the award announces, I already had a strong feeling that this project will win. The story idea is very innovative, smartly blending contemporary wuxia and youth elements together, which is a genre rarely seen in the market,” Annie said.

“This film will be a China-Malaysia co-production and is planned to be shot in Malaysia. From the early stages of its creation, it already targets for Asian market. During the meetings in the project market, all investors in China have shown great interest in the project, recognizing its high commercial potential,” Annie added.

Tan’s previous film, Barbarian Invasion, won the “Jury Grand Prix” at the main competition of the 24th SIFF’s Golden Goblet Award in 2022.

Apart from participating in SIFF PROJECT, Tan also served as a mentor and jury in the SIFF EXPLORE, a short film contest section of this year’s festival.
