SHORT STORY | The Great One by Pravin Kumar

She looked at her man fall to his knees; dejected. The sight of her man in despair jolted great anguish within her. Her heart ached from the unbearable injustice.

In desperation, she ran out of the home; looking at the tranquil sky, and shouted;

“O Great One, what is this play of yours? How can you be so cruel and merciless?

You leave the wicked to roam like kings. While you sit on your throne and enact severe punishment on my man, a good man.

What corruption is this? I demand justice.”

As she uttered her last words, a thunderous chuckle broke from the sky, and the divine lips spoke.

“My child, how silly of you to equate my guidance to punishment?

He is put to a terrible test, yes. But they’re within his strength to overcome.

I know this, for he is my creation.

O justice seeker, tell me, what is good without strength?

O the purest of heart. Remember, he is dragged into these challenges by me, so he can become the best of men.

For he is destined to lead my army in the foretold Great War and bring glory to the Heavens.

So, lift up your spirit and go inside your abode; tell him to rise and fight! For he is my most beloved child.”

Hearing these words, the woman obeyed the Great One’s command. For she is destined to be her Man’s lieutenant.
