It’s finally on the cards. Shamaine Othman, Malaysia’s multi-hyphenated writer, actor, director, producer, and stand-up comedian announced that she will be debuting her stand-up comedy special named ‘Oh No She Didn’t!’ this October.
Scheduled for one night only (for now), the show is scheduled to take place on 12 October 2022 at Damansara Performance Arts Centre (DPAC), Empire Damansara.
With an impressive ten years of experience doing stand-up comedy around the region and harnessing her stage presence, Shamaine decided that it is time for her to create a name for herself as a solo stand-up comedian – adding another discipline to an already cracking resume.
Known for her award-winning work for Projek Disko Baldi, a series of sketch comedy that started on stage but gained massive attention when it was turned into a TV show, and the highly acclaimed OlaBola Musical produced by Enfiniti Productions; Shamaine has spent more than ten years working in the Malaysian and Singaporean TV and film industry as writer, producer, director, and actor.
Some notable titles that she has worked on are Fear Factor (ASTRO), Club Mickey Mouse (Disney), Geng (ASTRO), Love in Lockdown (Sooka), Kuasa (ASTRO), Histeria (ASTRO), Rojak (Channel 5), Whoopie’s World (Okto) and Totally Totto (Okto).
Shamaine has also written and directed three short films, namely Love Story for Ikal Mayang Festival, Cuak, and KL24: Zombies.
“The show ‘Oh No She Didn’t!’ is a sassy one-woman show with themes embracing the life of a single woman at 39 and the messiness that comes with being a Malaysian in this day and age. It’s something that I’ve been planning for quite some time now but my schedule has always been too packed that this piece would time and again find itself being put on the back burner. As cliched now as it may sound, the global lockdown has given me the opportunity and the time to revisit this project and plan out the strategy on how I want to present this to my audience. It’s definitely intimidating but exciting at the same time. They say there’s nothing more rousing like a first-time experience, so I hope this show will live up to what I’ve been building up in my head and be received well by the country’s comedy fans”, says Shamaine.
‘Oh No She Didn’t!’ will be produced by Cinematic Sdn Bhd, previously helmed by the nation’s legendary film director and Shamaine’s father, Othman Hafsham.
The company will now be led by Shamaine under a new direction and is currently developing new, exciting titles for an ever-changing content landscape.
Shamaine explained, “I’ve been involved in the arts industry for as long as I can remember starting with Malaysia’s longest-running improv troupe, AIIA Improv. I’ve also had the honour of being the opening act for the international comedians, Gina Yashere and Ronny Chieng. I’ve written shows on many genres – thriller, horror, biographies but comedy will always have a special place in my heart. Thus it is time for Shamaine Othman to take centre stage and be her own headline. If there’s anything that the pandemic has taught us, it is to pursue your dreams because the future can be as unpredictable as Malaysian politics. I hope that you would come to my show and let’s have a great time together!”.
Tickets priced at RM80 (per tix) are already on sale here. DPAC is a 200-capacity theatre so book your tickets now. Follow Shamaine Othman here.
