As the Year of the Dragon approaches, Liver & Lung, the innovative force behind Malaysia’s renowned musicals, is unveiling its inaugural children’s theatre production, Sang Kancil & The Dragon King.
After the resounding success of sold-out shows like Sepet The Musical and Melur The Musical, Sang Kancil & The Dragon King holds the promise of an exhilarating adventure for both the young and the young-at-heart.
In a vibrant playground located in TTDI, the musical narrates the tale of Ben, an ordinary schoolboy possessing an extraordinary talent for painting.
His affection for the playground runs deep, leaving him devastated upon learning its impending demolition to make way for a towering concrete structure: a condominium.
As the playground faces its eve of destruction, enchantment unfolds, transforming Ben into Sang Kancil, the quick-witted mousedeer of legend.
This transformation into the fabled Sang Kancil sets the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
Joined by a band of misfits — a befuddled tiger, scheming crocodiles, and the formidable Dragon King poised to cast a shadow over Lunar New Year celebrations — Ben’s quest gains newfound intensity.
This story, blending Lunar New Year traditions and beloved Malaysian folklore characters, promises to delight and resonate with Malaysians of all ages.
“We set out to create a musical that not only captivates children but also reignites the youthful spirit in adults,” says Shafeeq Shajahan, founder of Liver & Lung and recipient of the Best Director at the 2020 BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.
Sang Kancil & The Dragon King represents the vast potential and promise within us all, a reminder that no matter our size, we can enact significant change.
The cast includes Joshua Anthony Gui, famed for his role in Sepet The Musical, returning to collaborate with Liver & Lung as Ben/Sang Kancil, the musical’s lead.
Joining Joshua are Putrina Rafie, known for her recent performance in Fault Lines at PJPAC, and Phraveen Arikiah, honored with the 2020 BOH Cameronian Arts Award for Best Supporting Performance.
“Sang Kancil & The Dragon King is a musical odyssey, celebrating the heart of Malaysian diversity, creativity, and the courageous spirit that defines our youth,” Shafeeq adds.
“I’m thrilled to collaborate with Josh, Veen, and Trina to bring this roller-coaster of wonder and life lessons to the stage.”
Liver & Lung’s musical will showcase original music and lyrics, blending traditional and contemporary sounds. Shafeeq, alongside frequent collaborator Irena Taib from the local indie-band The Impatient Sisters and Ji Yong, will develop the music. Su En Hoh oversees the production.
As Liver & Lung shows sell out swiftly, audiences are advised to secure tickets promptly.
