POETRY | This Year 2020 by Laila Hairani Abdullah Sanggura

This year 2020

I see the collapse of

a legitimate government

orchestrated by an old fox

who smugly thought

he had the numbers

resigned to seek

a fresh mandate

for his own political agenda

How ironic it was to see

his power-play backfired

when his right-hand man

took over the reins

leaving him out in the cold

as the whining toothless tiger

This year 2020

I see the selective execution

of the rule of law

whereby breaking the same rule

the ordinary are fined and jailed

the privileged are easily let off

by a slap on the wrist

where the guilty siphoning billions

are allowed to walk free awaiting appeal

the poor mice are caged in lock-ups

while still on trial

where elected frogs bound by

oaths of service with integrity

leap from one party to the other

for their vested interests

This year 2020

I see the mega impact of COVID-19

infecting or killing by the millions

casual touch or close proximity

can now be deadly

boundaries are set around

home, district, state, or country

like a prison or a sanctuary

depends on which side of the coin

you see

while the world economies crumble

Mother nature revives and thrives

with the air becoming fresher,

vegetation greener and water clearer

free from the greedy exploits of man

This year 2020

I see many real-life lessons

for me to ponder and learn.
