lowercase laboratories is announcing their latest exhibition, “hello, can you call me back?”.
This six-hour, participative exhibit delves into the emotions of loneliness and anxiety that people feel while waiting for an important call.
The exhibition is set in a bedroom and will feature six performers, each leading an hour of the exhibit.
Attendees are invited to call and speak with the performer leading that particular hour, and the performers will be ready to listen and engage in a conversation about the attendee’s day and the emotions that come with them.
Directed by Low Yee Choy, the exhibition aims to provide comfort, support, and coping mechanisms for individuals with an anxious attachment style.
Choy’s personal experience inspired the exhibit, and as someone with an anxious attachment style, he understands the feeling of being alone and the anxiety that comes with it.
“This project liberates me to know that I’m not alone or crazy when I find there are people out there that share the same anxiety/ attachment style,” said Choy.
“Last year, I learned that I need to be independent, especially when my partner can’t be there to support me 24/7. My personal coping mechanism has been practising the ukulele and writing down my thoughts when I spiral and overthink. These have helped me to collect my thoughts.”
“hello, can you call me back?” features Ashvinder Kaur, Dexter Zhen, Dinesh Kumar, Mia Sabrina Mahadir, Murasaki Haru, and Putrina Rafie.
The scenic design is by Bryan Chang, stage managed by Chin Zhing and Lok Yee, and Front Of House (FOH) managed by Jazzie Lee Jin Jye.
“I believe that everyone has different ways to cope, and I want this exhibition to demonstrate that to attendees,” said Choy.
“I want this exhibition to give ideas about what they can do when they’re lonely or anxious.”
“hello, can you call me back?” will take place on March 25th and 26th, 2023, from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm at Projek Bilik Sempit, Revolution Stage, Selangor. The exhibition is for mature attendees only and contains strong language, as well as themes involving suicide, violence, and sexuality. Purchase tickets for RM25 here.
