After nearly five years in the back-burner, the long-awaited album Ipoh Sound is finally out.
Released on 26 January 2024, this compilation is a collaboration between the artist collective Projek Rabak, and the recording studio and label, Nagarakota. It’s set to feature 10 tracks recorded in December 2020.
The album showcases the talents of Perak-based bands such as Harmacy, an indie rock outfit, Gopeng’s Lovethee, HEM and artists such as Meor Hailree, and Jack Malik.
The creators of Ipoh Sound hope to inspire other artists to experiment with music and potentially ignite Ipoh’s music scene.
“I hope Ipoh Sound will catalyse more literary or musical artists, regardless of their origins, to sow new seeds in experimenting with music,” Meor said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Hazriq, Harmacy‘s drummer, hoped that the new generation would embrace bands like theirs whose songs don’t get airtime on the radio.
Ammar Muadz, HEM’s guitarist, shared a similar sentiment as he hopes that the album will attract new listeners and potentially revive Ipoh’s music scene to its former glory.
The tracks in this compilation are distinct from the artists’ previous works. They feature raw guitar sounds, pop backing vocals, sing-along elements, and non-straightforward lyrics. The artists expressed their excitement about the new recording methods and music arrangements.
“I want to offer sounds different from what we’ve done before, yet, at the same time, still in line with our desires,” Mohd Jayzuan said, adding that he was glad to experiment musically for the album together with poet, Jack Malik, as well as the other artists involved.
“Reading poetry live and getting a heads-up from the producer on how to achieve the best outcome feels different,” Jack said.
The album’s producer, Mohd Jayzuan, pushed the artists out of their comfort zones, exploring ideas they had never considered. The artists found the process initially stressful but ultimately satisfying. Jayzuan’s goal was to offer different dynamics and sounds while still aligning with the artists’ desires.
Najmi Jamaluddin played an important role in engineering, mixing and mastering the album.
