What does it mean to be a Viking in 1000AD? If this has ever crossed your mind, you have to catch ‘Forkbeard : A Viking Musical Odyssey’ at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) between 27-29 October, 2023.
The MYTH Productions musical directed by Syrian refugee, Karam Tabba, is set to get you in high spirits for the high seas, as they transport you to the era of the Svolder battle, the grandest naval confrontation of its time.
The musical promises an immersive experience with sword fights, romance, Viking warships, witches, and a story based on true events that forever altered the course of European history.
But this captivating narrative is far more than just a history lesson; it’s a deeply human drama that explores the themes of love, faith, betrayal, greed, ambition, and revenge. Two mighty kings, Forkbeard of Denmark and Olav of Norway, are feuding brothers in arms. In the test of their brotherhood bond, their loved ones get caught in the clash. Together they face insurmountable odds, their journey filled with tears and laughter, love and faith, all while grappling with the counterforces that threaten to tear them apart.
The show features a talented all-Malaysian cast of 21, led by an award-winning artistic team such as Aida Redza on choreography, Dominic Luk on musical direction, and Karam Tabba, an emerging writer who was featured in ‘His Story’, a project by Fa Abdul. These young talents pour their hearts and souls into stirring ballads, war chants, and laments, all accompanied by a live band and the inspiring orchestral arrangements of Penang’s own Vince de Leon.
As the audience immerses themselves in the hauntingly beautiful set, they’ll be transported to the misty forests of Scandinavia, where the gods Odin, Freja, and Thor reign supreme. The performance promises a unique and unforgettable theater experience that delves into Viking trials and triumphs.
