Watched by doves in the morning air,
The child began to pick roses,
Flinging up a handful of dust.
It seems just yesterday when after lunch, lounging
In the awning’s shade and the garden’s cool, sleeping
By the rosebush, we dreamt of living.
And now dusk falls–
Only the quiet descent of a broken petal
When the crows are flying homeward overhead.
