Syahbandi Samat is a self-taught Malaysian artist, who was born in 1992 in Kuching, Sarawak. He is renowned for his extraordinary skill with the ballpoint pen.

Syahbandi was one of the five winners in the 2011 cycle of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA), when he was only 19 years old. He was also a recipient of the Young Guns Award 2016.

Syahbandi Samat draws inspiration from Spanish artist and poet Juan Francisco Casas, initially creating artworks depicting myths and fairy tales through his unique, sometimes dark, and twisted yet humorous lens.

Over time, his art has transformed, delving deeper into introspection, projecting his worries and apprehensions into surreal landscapes that captivate at first sight.

Syahbandi’s use of the ballpoint pen transcends its conventional function as a writing tool. Fueled by determination and hard work, he consistently refines his skills as a visual artist. Rather than settling, he actively broadens his artistic horizons, exploring fresh forms and methods to articulate his concepts.

His artistic journey has taken him to various exhibitions in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Shanghai, showcasing his evolving body of work.
