Nia Khalisa (b.1995, Malaysia) is a multidisciplinary artist with a fine arts background. She has an affinity for working with delicate media such as rice paper and textiles. In 2019, a brief study of batik in Surakarta, Indonesia, cultivated her interest in batik – an art that also has presence in Malaysia. Historically, the humble batik is “a cloth with purpose”, and reflects the culture and roots of its people.

Nia just completed a three-month residency at Bon Ton Locale (February to April 2022) and produced a body of work, mainly on textiles, as she absorbed from her new space in Langkawi— in parallel, exploring alternative approaches to creating batik-inspired designs.
