Sarawak, Malaysia
Catriona Maddocks is a creative director, artist and researcher based in Sarawak, East Malaysia.
She graduated with a Masters in Arts Management from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and is fluent in Bahasa Malaysia.
She is also the co-founder of Catama, a social enterprise working to document and nurture traditional craft practises and indigenous knowledge and building communities that are empowered agents of change. Founding Borneo Bengkel in 2017, she produces, curates and facilitates content and creative residency programmes for pan-Bornean creative practitioners. The scope of the work enables crossovers and interactions between rural heritage practices and urban creative expression to question indigeneity, ownership and experimentation.
Her work focuses on the exploration of identity, community narratives and cultural heritage within a contemporary context. Through the lens of a long-term foreign resident of Malaysia, of non-South East Asian descent, she creates work and builds platforms that encourage dialogue, engagement, exploration, questioning and diversion from assumed narratives, tangible and intangible heritage and creative expression.
Her cross-disciplinary work is often focussed on collaborative platforms building, and developing systems, models and spaces for interaction, communication and hybridisation.
