Chadwick Moore’s ‘Endless Buffet‘ converges myth, nature, and the extravagance of consumer culture in thought-provoking ways.
The works comprising Chadwick’s most recent sculptures and paintings is currently on view at The Godown Arts Centre in Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur.
Curated by Ivan Alexander Francis Gabriel, Endless Buffet is an ironical reference to the all-pervasive consumerism that has taken over modern society.
“The show is a reflection on the idea and absurdity of excess consumption. It is about our entrenched compulsion to consume without thought or regard to the consequences’’, says Chadwick, an American artist who is based in Kuala Lumpur with a studio in Pantai Dalam.
The carefully curated canvases and sculptures elicit an exploration of psychological landscapes that challenge and intrigue.
In pieces like ‘Beulah Land,’ Chadwick masterfully employs a mixed media approach, deftly incorporating fragments from cruise ship and fast-food advertisements into his compositions.
These disparate elements converge to construct a mythical world, a “Land of Plenty,” where streams transmute into water slides, and the very hills themselves are molded from the symbols of consumerism, such as the iconic imagery of the fastfood chain, KFC.
Another work, ‘Atmospheric River’, a site-specific installation, was inspired by the plants and trailing vines around the building where it is on show.
The brightly coloured sculpture made with recycled motor oil bottles, wires and metal bolts was recently unveiled as a show teaser at The Godown Artists Market in late September.
Speaking for The Godown, Wan Yee Lim Co-Founder said: “For this exhibition, we were presented with an opportunity to showcase Chadwick’s sculptures and paintings in our AiR building, an unconventional setting with no walls. We were delighted to see the artist coming together with the team to make the space work for the show. The result is an exhibition that we believe to be at once surprising and pleasing, and hopefully, visitors too will have a memorable experience.”
Endless Buffet by Chadwick Moore is a journey that beckons you to consider the entanglement of the familiar and the fantastical, offering a profound reflection on the surreal nature of contemporary existence.
The exhibition runs from 7 October to November 5, 2023 at The Godown Arts Centre in Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur. Exhibition hours are 12pm to 7pm.
