‘Burden of Proof’ by Dabble Dabble Jer (DDJ) Collective, is a bold debut theatre show in Penang that highlight the lived experiences of sexual violence in Malaysia.
This inclusive, multi-disciplinary devised theatre production is poised to make a significant impact on both the local arts scene and the global fight against gender-based violence.
The driving force behind “Burden of Proof” is a response to submissions received from victim-survivors who contributed to a nationwide open call in early 2023.
This poignant and authentic source material forms the basis for the production, ensuring that the stories presented on stage are not only compelling but also reflective of the harsh realities faced by survivors of sexual violence in Malaysia.
“We came together as a collective to create Burden of Proof following my personal experience of sexual violence.
“Together we wanted to create a safe space where these stories can be told and heard. We published a nationwide open call earlier this year and the submissions we received have been woven into the space that we’ve created through Burden of Proof, said Miriam
“Some of these submissions have served as inspiration for our theatrical production, while others will be showcased through the set design and in the ‘Quiet Space,’ a separate room where visitors and audience members can take a break and engage with the pieces at their own pace,” DDJ creative producer and founding member Miriam Devaprasana told Eksentrika.
She also added that DDJ has collaborated with a mental health partner, Skybi, for ‘Burden of Proof.’
Under the expert co-direction of Charity Yong and Ysabel Loh, ‘Burden of Proof’ offers a unique perspective on the weight of survival and the challenges faced by survivors.
Through the transformative power of theater, this collective invites audience members to embark on a journey into a realm of collective awareness and responsibility in the global fight against sexual and gender-based violence.
Charity Yong, Ysabel Loh and Miriam Devaprasana, were also the brilliant minds behind the script, while Bernardine Jeanne Abeysekra takes on the role of Music Director and Composer and Darynn Wee as the Production Manager.
Furthermore, Justin K. contributes their artistic vision as the Set & Graphic Designer and Installation Artist.
The diverse cast bringing these powerful stories to life comprises Darynn Wee, Khoo Jen Leon (LeonieTunez), Roshini Chandran, Sofea Lee, Villmett Thanakody, and Ysabel Loh.
The dedicated and passionate team behind ‘Burden of Proof’ stands as a testament to the commitment driving this production.
Moreover, the production aligns with the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which marks a significant milestone in our collective responsibility and awareness concerning gender-based violence in our society.
