The National Art Gallery proudly unveils its latest artistic marvel, ATMA KIRANA, a mesmerizing site-specific digital art installation by the acclaimed new media artist, Abdul Shakir, also known as Belalang (Grasshopper). The captivating exhibit marks the latest addition to the ongoing Single (Hanya Satu) showcase, residing majestically in the gallery’s entry hall until 30 October 2023.

Abdul Shakir’s reputation as one of Malaysia’s foremost new media artists is well-deserved, given his penchant for pushing the boundaries of art through imaginative exploration of digital and interactive elements to create immersive experiences. ATMA KIRANA is no exception.

Meaning “Beautiful Soul” in both ancient Malay and Sanskrit languages, ATMA KIRANA beckons visitors to embark on an artistic odyssey that delves into the profound significance of the Rukun Negara (National Principles). This groundbreaking digital art installation comprises five distinct flower motifs, each masterfully capturing the essence of the guiding principles: Faith (Percaya), Loyalty (Setia), Good Governance (Luhur), Rules of Law (Adil), and Kindness (Baik).

The installation, a breathtaking ensemble of 100 suspended LED panels, dances harmoniously mid-air. With a symphony of colors, lights, and form, ATMA KIRANA blossoms into a vibrant spectacle that entices visitors to explore and contemplate diverse viewpoints.

What sets ATMA KIRANA apart is its sustainability ethos. Repurposed LED panels, once fixtures on roadside billboards that adorned Kuala Lumpur’s cityscape, form the very core of this exhibit. In doing so, Abdul Shakir’s creation echoes a commitment to incorporate sustainable design practices while weaving messages of environmental responsibility into its narrative.

The artist beautifully combines traditional Malaysian weaving patterns inspired by the Songket,  with modern LED technology to create the captivating artwork. As you explore the piece, you’ll notice a mesmerizing blend of old and new, adding depth and texture to the installation. “Atma Kirana” represents unity and shared values, inviting viewers to reflect on Malaysia’s cultural heritage and its potential to bring people together.

“In the artwork titled “Percaya”, I wanted to explore the profound symbolism of the Lotus flower. Drawing inspiration from the exquisite beauty of Lotus flowers and incorporating the intricate songket motifs of “Tampuk Berembang” and “Awan Larat”, this artwork invites viewers to embrace the deeper meanings associated with these timeless natural elements.

The Lotus holds significant symbolism in various faiths in the world. It serves as a powerful symbol of purity, as it gracefully emerges from the muddy waters without any stains, representing spiritual enlightenment and transcendence. The Lotus’s connection to faith and purity is intricately woven into the fabric of this artwork,” said Abdul Shakir.

This awe-inspiring installation receives staunch support from Yayasan TM (YTM) through its Digital Tech Incubator Programme (DTI), and its realization is made possible by the collaborative efforts of Pixel World, Helio Media, iNYALA, Filamen, PORT Ipoh, Converse Malaysia, and RUBIX Communications. To enhance the visitor’s connection with the artwork, a series of complementary public programs, including artist sharing sessions and workshops, will be held throughout the exhibition’s duration.

As Malaysia celebrates Merdeka and Malaysia Day, the National Art Gallery extends a warm invitation to the public to experience ATMA KIRANA, an art installation that seeks to inspire self-discovery through the essence of Rukun Negara and the ever-evolving tapestry of Malaysia’s diverse culture.

The ATMA KIRANA exhibition is open to the public from August 9th to October 30th, 2023, and admission is free.  Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of ATMA KIRANA and witness the fusion of art, technology, and sustainability in perfect harmony.
