Ammama’s Old Days by Malini Lakshmi Bai

An evening of silence and serenity
Brings nothing but tranquility
In the doorway, stood an old lady
Spending her old days freely.

Calmly stood in her white saree
Reminisced about her young days in Thalassery
All seemed to happen in a blink of an eye
The story of Meenakshi Amma in a frame.

Kerala the God’s own country
Malayalam the language of beauty
Beauteous backwaters of Alleppey
Heavenly Puttu and kadala curry.

Theyyam the bewitching ritualistic dance
Elegant elephants at the Vadakkunnathan temple
Blessings of Lord Shiva at the shrine
Attracts thousands of Keralites all at once.

Watching traditional boats passing by
Listening to the nature full of harmony
Sometimes feeling a little melancholy
That’s the life of this old lady.

Getting used to living alone
Spending old days in Kozhikode
Missing the golden days of her old love
Resting on bed with peace and hope.
